HISTORY OF THE JOINT DAKOTA STATES
COUNCIL OF MACHINISTS

The Joint Dakota States Council  of Machinists was chartered October 3, 1988. The Joint Dakota is mad up of IAM members from North and South Dakota, including:

IAM & AW Local Lodge 862 from Aberdeen SD
IAM & AW Local Lodge 2536 from Britton SD (in 1988 decertified and merged with
        Local Lodge 862)
IAM & AW Local Lodge 2357 from Watertown SD
IAM & AW Local Lodge 2525 from Fargo ND

The objective of the Joint Dakota is to get involved with the politics which affect us as working people. The Joint Dakota Convention meets bi-annually inviting Political Representatives and Union Officials to speak at their conference. With communication being the key to knowledge the Joint Dakota Conference gives the opportunity for Politicians to find out what the Union expects from them to get union support. The Union Officials are there to keep the lines of communication open and to help with any questions of problems that we may have as union members.

The first Executive board was appointed by Jerry Burnett at the forming of the council held in Watertown SD in 1988:
President Richard Jensen LL 862
Vice President Darlene Birney  LL 2357
Recording Secretary Dawn (Mueller) Theunissen LL 2636
Financial Secretary Jim Anderson LL 2525

The first Executive Board elected in 1989:

President: Richard Jensen
Vice President: Darlene Birney
Recording Secretary: Donna Miller
Financial Secretary: Jim Anderson

The 2003 through 2005 Executive Board:

President:  Kevin Murch
Vice President:  Barb May
Recording Secretary:  Richard Schultz
Treasurer:  LeRoy Volk

Working people of America have had to unite in a struggle to achieve their goals over the last century. The gains that unions have achieved have brought gains to the public also. It was Labor that led the drive for public education for every child. The labor movement has been a driving force for American progress. This progress could not be done without getting involved in politics. This is why the Joint Dakota States Council of Machinists was created.

The 2006 through 2008 Executive Board:

President: Kevin Murch
Vice President:  Barb May
Recording Secretary: Barb Martinson
Treasurer: LeRoy Volk
